In an effort to save money, the State House using Bill 2 224:215 is seeking to use federal money which it receives for libraries and which has been allocated to its five vans, for other purposes. It proposes eliminating 3 of the vans. While this would not totally eliminate inter-library loans, it would drastically reduce them. Since so many of our patrons use inter-library loans to get the books and movies they want, it would make a huge difference for us and for every small library in the state. If we have to mail inter-library loans it will cost patrons approximately $6 for every book they borrow. Please write your state reps to express how valuable the van service is for you.
Traditionally, starting the first weekend in December the library not only has a book sale, but a holiday gift sale as well. We have offered brand new books for as little as ten cents and other quality gifts for unbelievably low prices. The ideal place for children to come do their shopping for the whole family. All profits go to our scholarship fund. If you have items you wish to donate to the sale please drop them off during the library hours.
On Tuesday June 7, at the Library, five of the six winners of
this year's Celeste Klein Scholarship received their checks (and were badgered
into having some cookies and punch before leaving).
They were, alphabetically, Raymond Abair, Megan Butcher, Anna Haron, Alex
Lamphear, and Elias Mills. Jessie Laurie, the other winner could not make it due
to a prior commitment. All of the book and book bag sales, and rug hooking events
that the Library does to raise money during the year, become worthwhile when
we're able to, even in a small way, help Springfield kids (and in the past,
adults) further their education. Once again the library is giving out around $6,000 in scholarships.
